Make 'Earth Hour' Happen

<< back to releases

On Saturday, March 27 at 8 p.m., people all over the world will be asked to turn off their lights for just one hour – Earth Hour – to show it is possible to take global action on climate change.

Switching off lights is just one simple action that people can take to help make a difference, while also sending the powerful message that we care about our planet.

The World Wildlife Federation-Canada (WWF) is hoping to ensure as much national participation as possible. In Canada last year, more than half the adult population took part – over 10 million Canadians – in more than 270 cities.

This year, the WWF is hoping to make Earth Hour even bigger with more public engagement.

In order to make Earth Hour more than a symbolic event, it is important people understand that we each have an important role to play in the fight against climate change. Our every day actions, like turning off unnecessary lights, , hanging clothes to dry, and taking transit to work, all add up. Individual action is also important because it sends a strong signal to businesses and government that ordinary Canadians want action from them too.
